Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 our New Favorite Diver’s Watch

When it comes to watches with black dials and black bezels with a Rolex crown on them, we cannot stop talking about our love for those beauties. Our newest passion is the Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 that was released at the Basel, Switzerland watch fair known as Baselworld. This watch is somewhat of a “retro” look that is becoming a popular choice within the high-end watch world today. In 2008, Rolex replaced the Sea-Dweller with the Deepsea – a very intense, extreme Rolex with an incredible depth ability, and enormous case.

Even though we think the Deepsea is an fantastic watch, we are somewhat purists when it comes to case size and over-sized watches here at Everest. The Rolex Sea-Dweller 4000 is our kind of watch! The case dimensions are 40mm wide, the bracelet is 20mm at the lugs, and the crown guards are thin but still protective just like the Sea-Dwellers before 2008. There are some other design features that we are extremely excited to see on a Rolex with Sea-Dweller stamped on the dial.

One feature that we are excited to see transitioned to the new Sea-Dweller is the use of an over-sized SEL (Solid End Link) just like the Deepsea. This very masculine, almost verbose accent adds a very modern touch to a throw back watch. One item that we cannot live without adding to any new Rolex diver’s watch is the Glidelock clasp on the Rolex Sea-Dweller. The clasp is actually a combination of the DSSD Glidelock and the Submariner Glidelock clasps. These updated modern features to the Rolex Sea-Dweller bracelet make this soon to be our possible favorite diving watch.

Another item that is a must on any Sea-Dweller is the Helium Escape Valve. The titanium valve is something that 99.99% of Sea-Dweller owners will never use, but it is a look that goes hand in hand with the Sea-Dweller. One other design that must transition to every Sea-Dweller is an entirely smooth Crystal. A Cyclops over the date on the crystal of such a tool watch is unimportant and a physical distraction from telling how much time has passed when you are diving.

As Rolex fans, we had a little tear six years ago when Rolex decided to take the Sea-Dweller off of the line up and replace it with the DSSD. Now though, we have never been happier with Rolex and its design team for bringing back the Rolex Sea-Dweller that we missed!
